Beneath USS Constitution’s waterline lies a strange, cramped, copper-lined, dark room: the aft magazine. The magazine was a store-room for gunpowder. During battle, the ship’s boys, “powder monkeys”, would go down to the magazine grabbing bags of gunpowder for the Sailors on the gun teams manning the various guns on the decks above.
