The SDLP opened a new party office in west Belfast on Tuesday. SDLP west Belfast councillor Paul Doherty was joined by SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood and other party representatives at the office on the Andersonstown Road.

Paul Doherty is the SDLP Representative for West Belfast and was the Party’s West Belfast candidate in the 2022 Assembly election campaign. Paul previously spent 14 years working in the Royal Hospital and is the founder of the community led charity, Foodstock.

Party leader Colum Eastwood joined west Belfast councillor Paul Doherty to officially open the new office, which Mr Eastwood described as highlighting the "party's commitment to supporting communities in the area".

In the following general election, the Conservatives came to power in Westminster and Fitt held his seat in Belfast West. In June that year the first direct election to the European Parliament were held. The SDLP candidate was John Hume who won a seat with 25% of the first preference vote.
