Established in 1948, the ROK was officially recognized by the UN through General Assembly 195. The UN played a key role in the birth of the ROK. The ROK is home to many national, subregional, and regional offices of the UN agencies and international organizations.

In 1947, the UN General Assembly established the UN Temporary Commission on Korea (UNTCOK) to support the birth of the Republic of Korea. When the Korean War broke out in June 1950, the United Nations Command (UNC) was launched to restore peace and security on the Korean Peninsula.
