Oct 5, 2015 · Apparently Canadian scientists created a theory that the Saginaw Bay was created by an impact crater 500 Mil years ago. If that was correct, then it was the biggest impact crater in the US. Looking at the terrain, it looks plausible.

Feb 1, 2019 · The hypothetical impact structure in the Saginaw Bay (Michigan, USA, Lake Huron) has been tested by the gravity data derived from the recent gravity field model EIGEN 6C4 (expanded to degree and order 2190, with ground resolution of ~9 km).
Research on the glacial geology of the Saginaw Bay region, now spanning over a century (e.g. Leverett and Taylor, 1915 and much work since then), has repeatedly advocated for a glacial erosional origin for Saginaw Bay, as in uenced by the underlying Paleozoic sedimentary fl bedrock and the Michigan Basin structure.
For the Saginaw Bay area, we confirm that we do not see any typical impact crater in terms of gravity disturbance or the radial second order derivative, possibly because of the thick layer of the ice located at the place and time of the impact.

Saginaw Bay fingered by gravity data as ice impact feature
Dec 22, 2018 · A paper published today in the Journal of Great Lakes Research provides evidence from gravity anomalies that Saginaw Bay in Michigan is a remnant feature of an impact into an ancient ice sheet. This and the recent discovery of Hiawatha Crater make for an interesting configuration.
