A cardinal vowel is a vowel sound produced when the tongue is in an extreme position, either front or back, high or low. The current system was systematised by Daniel Jones in the early 20th century, [1] though the idea goes back to earlier phoneticians, notably Ellis [2] and Bell. [3]
The basic coordinates used in establishing the cardinal vowel positions were the vertical axis with the opposition high/low (close/open) and the horizontal axis with the opposition front/back. The idea was to establish extreme positions for vowel quality and use them as a reference system for all the other vowels.

We can define an articulatory vowel space in terms of the limits to the extremes of tongue position that still give rise to non-nasal resonant sounds. The idea is that if the tongue position became more extreme than these limits then turbulence would occur.
