Vasantrao Phulsingh Naik (1 July 1913 – 18 August 1979) was an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1963 until 1975. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh during 1952-1957, of the then bilingual Bombay State during 1957-1960 and of Maharashtra during 1960 to 1977.

Vasantrao Naik became the chief minister of Maharashtra on 5 December 1963. [1] He succeeded P. K. Sawant's interim government that had been sworn in after Marotrao Kannamwar's death. [2] Naik's government served until 1967 legislative elections, after which Naik was sworn in for a second term.

Vasantrao Naik, also called V. P. Naik was a politician who served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1963 until 1975. An influential leader of state politics, he is the longest-serving Chief Minister of Maharashtra up-to-date.

Following 1972 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, incumbent chief minister Vasantrao Naik was re-appointed, and he formed his third government on 14 March 1972. [1] This was to be Naik's last government which served until 20 February 1975. [2]

A progressive farmer and politician, Naik became Maharashtra's longest-serving Chief Minister post-independence. He is hailed as the father of the green revolution in Maharashtra, implementing the 'Panchayat Raj' and the 'Employment Guarantee Scheme'.

Later in the early 90s, his nephew Sudhakar Naik became the CM, making them the only uncle-nephew combine to hold the top post in the state.
