Clare Castle is a high-mounted ruinous medieval castle in the parish and former manor of Clare in Suffolk, England, anciently the caput of a feudal barony. It was built shortly after the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 by Richard Fitz Gilbert, having high motte and bailey and later improved in stone.

The Castle Ruins. Clare Castle, including the impressively high motte with the Keep on top, was originally built of wood by Richard Bienfait (Richard FitzGilbert) having been given the lands by William the Conqueror ten years after the Norman Invasion in 1066.

In the 14th century, Elizabeth de Clare was one of the wealthiest and most powerful women of her time, who defied her king to defend her lands. Castle and Barracks. The O’Brien castle dates from the fifteenth/sixteenth century and the barracks from 1748-51. This strategic fortress was captured by Cromwellians in 1651 and by Williamites in 1691.
