The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Thompson Class O1 was a class of 2-8-0 steam locomotive designed by Edward Thompson for freight work. None have survived to preservation.

The Thompson O1 2-8-0 Locomotives. Thompson became the LNER's CME in 1941, and quickly initiated a programme of standardisation. One of Thompson's first standardised designs was for a heavy goods 2-8-0 to replace all of the existing 2-8-0s, 0-8-0s, and a variety of 0-6-0s including the J19s, J20s, J38s, and J39s.

Nov 2, 2009 · After the arrival of the 9Fs at Tyne Dock the 01s would still occasionally appear on the ore trains to Consett, or as banking locomotives on these trains. They also appeared at Darlington and Teesside on freights from the Tyneside area. If ore traffic was light then Tyne Dock engines might be loaned out to neighbouring sheds.
