The London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) Thompson Class L1 was a class of 2-6-4T steam locomotives designed by Edward Thompson. The prototype no. 9000 was built in 1945, but the remaining 99 were built under British Railways jurisdiction between 1948–1950.

Thirty of these new L1 locomotives were authorised in April 1944, and the first locomotive (No. 9000) was completed in May 1945. This was the only tank engine built by the LNER that was painted in lined apple-green livery.

Feb 25, 2013 · The first L1 had a different rear step ladder arrangement which is why the (now ABS) L1 kit needs to be altered! The kit designer worked off the original GA and did not know that 9000 was unique in this respect.

This example shows a cross-country Ordinary Passenger c1957 with L1 No 67765 in charge (it moved between Middlesbrough and Whitby) and a 4-set has been provided with lavatories and more space for 1st class passengers.
