Jan 9, 2011 · I arrived in Vietnam & was immediately assigned to a rifle company with the 9th Marines in mid-July 1968. Within days I was in my first fight on a hill near the DMZ. That day changed my life forever.

Con Thien (Vietnamese: Cồn Tiên, meaning the "Hill of Angels") was a military base that started out as a U.S. Army Special Forces camp before transitioning to a United States Marine Corps combat base.

Sixty-three (63) officers and enlisted personnel known to have belonged to the 174th AHC (and her support units) were killed in Vietnam and Laos. Most deaths occurred while in the 174th, while a few occurred after 174th personnel had been transferred to other units.

The prominent hill in the crash area is Hill 174. The site is about 3.5-4 km north of Helicopter Valley (Song Ngan Valley). At times while hiking toward the site, hill 174 is visible and the compass is not needed.

Jan 15, 2022 · On May 28th, the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines made heavy contact with the NVA in bunkers on Hill 174, approximately four miles from Con Thien. Two Companies, M and L, attacked the enemy fortifications late in the afternoon.

G Company, 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, with close air support, assaulted and won the hill on 20 July 1968, suffering three dead and 11 wounded.” Richard Yaco was one of two artists recruited to join the Marine Corps to serve as a combat artist in Vietnam.

This is LZ San Juan Hill, a mountain-top fire support base (FSB) located about 10-15 statue miles to the west of Duc Pho. The coordinates are approximately BS 634 380, and it is in the mountains approximately six miles northeast of the Special Forces camp at Ba-To.

Jan 9, 2011 · After the action on Hill 174, I was asked to write up a a report for a Silver Star Citation for George Gipson, the young Marine who was killed helping me. I've wondered for decades if he ever received, posthumously of course, the Award.
