It was only barely alluded to, but the alternate universe Batman briefly mentioned that there was some sort of Jokerizing virus going around in Gotham, and I think the implication is that Hal was infected by it—hence the manic grin and, well, what he does here to open the issue.

Feb 18, 2025 · Mattel did a later re-release of Hal under the “All-Star” banner, which fixed this issue, as well as tweaking some of the paint/color choices. Both versions included Hal’s power battery, which seems to be an oddly bright green; I’ve always envisioned it being more on par with the color of his suit, but it’s more of a lime green here.

Hal Jordan in the comic canon is a cocky, reckless air force pilot, and this would fit a Swashbuckler persona (except in the IWD canon he could be a sea adventurer/military sailor as their equivalent).

Hal Jordan, later known as Parallax, is the main antagonist of Green Lantern: Beware My Power, the fifth installment of the Tomorrowverse. He is a former member of the Green Lantern Corps who immediately betrayed them after receiving the Parallax entity from Sinestro .

Johns was writing noob Hal in JL at the start of his journey and peak Hal in Green Lantern at the end of his journey at the same time. Yeah. This was a symptom of people being unable to decide whether or not Nu52 was completely in its own continuity from stuff that came before it.

Drawing from his love for science-fiction, Schwartz intended to show the new Green Lantern in a more modern light, enlisting writer John Broome and artist Gil Kane, who in 1959 would reintroduce Green Lantern to the world in Showcase #22 (October 1959) by creating Hal Jordan.
