Dec 2, 2022 — Gang signs are hand gestures and nonverbal signals that are used by members of certain gangs to communicate with one another. These signs often represent the gang’s identity, territory, and beliefs, and are used as a way to intimidate or disrespect rival gangs and showing dominance in the community.
Gangs, unchecked and unidentified in a school setting, often engage in threat and intimidation; physical and cyber bullying; fighting; recruiting; and criminal activities such as the introduction and use of weapons, assault, sex traficking, vandalism, and illegal drug sales.
Recognizing the warning signs may prevent crisis and gang involvement. Pre-gang behavior: • Poor school progress and achievement • Truancy • Lack of hobbies/constructive activities • Frequent negative contact with police • Sudden change in personality/behavior • Problems at home • Draws gang signs/graffiti
