Lava erupted from the summit of Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. Dramatic footage shows geologists from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory collecting tephra that fell on Crater Rim Drive on January 15. The area is closed to the public within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Viewers can hear the tinkling sound of glassy lava particles landing on the road. Another striking video captures bright red-orange hot liquid pouring out of the summit, reaching heights up to 328ft (100 metres). Kilauea is the world's most active volcanic mass and is the central feature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Its caldera is nearly three miles long and two miles wide, with an area of more than four square miles.

HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii Gov. Josh Green on Monday proposed a range of new penalties to crack down on those who flout the state's fireworks laws, nearly two weeks after a fireworks explosion at a Honolulu home on New Year's Eve killed four people and injured about 20 others. The potential new measures include $300 tickets police could issue to those who shoot off fireworks and class A felony charges and decades in prison for those whose use of fireworks leads to serious injury or death. The governor plans to include the proposals in a bill he will send lawmakers for the new legislative session beginning Wednesday.
