NAGOYA, JAPAN—The Mainichi reports that the Middle Pleistocene fossils known as “Ushikawa Man,” once suggested to be the oldest known human remains in Japan, are actually bear bones.
The new research has established that Japan's "Ushikawa Man" fossils, once thought to be from a human who lived more than 20,000 years ago, are in fact from a bear.
In the research, the Ushikawa man fossils and bone samples from bears were compared by CT scanning and other methods. The samples consisted of 11 from brown bears and 13 from Asian black bears.
