MOSLEY, Va. — The votes have been tabulated, and the baby pygmy hippo at the Metro Richmond Zoo has been named. “Poppy” was the winner in voting from more than 116,000 ballots, the zoo said in a news release on Monday. The female hippo garnered 52.8% of the votes, which came from hippo lovers across 165 countries.
Endangered pygmy hippo born at Virginia zoo
According to the zoo, the pygmy hippo is an endangered species native to the swamps and rivers of West Africa. Less than 2,500 mature individuals remain in the wild. Unlike common hippos, pygmy hippos do not live in groups and are usually solitary or in pairs.
