The public is able to see the new endangered pygmy hippo calf at the Metro Richmond Zoo in Virginia. The mother and calf returned to the pool Dec. 30. It was the calf's first time submerged in water since being born in the pool three weeks earlier.
Endangered pygmy hippo born at Virginia zoo
According to the zoo, the pygmy hippo is an endangered species native to the swamps and rivers of West Africa. Less than 2,500 mature individuals remain in the wild. Unlike common hippos, pygmy hippos do not live in groups and are usually solitary or in pairs.

Iris and “New Deng” (trademark pending) have been relocated to a private hay-filled enclosure for the time being, which will allow them to properly bond, zoo officials said. Newest pygmy hippo born on US soil gets a name
Poppy was born to parents Iris and Corwan after a 7-month gestation. The baby girl is Iris and Corwin’s third calf in 4.5 years. This birth was also the first time that Iris gave birth underwater.
