Buried under 2,000 years of volcanic debris, archaeologists in Pompeii have uncovered the largest Roman bathhouse ever found in the city. Located in a previously unexplored section of Pompeii, the opulent bathhouse belonged to a wealthy politician who spared no expense in its construction.

A ground-breaking discovery has been made in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, almost 2,000 years on from being completely covered in ash. The wealthy city had 10,000 to 20,000 residents in its hay day, though following the two-day eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, it was preserved under a layer of ash.

An entire block of Pompeii has now been uncovered, revealing a laundry and bakery, as well as the large private house. It's thought these were all owned by one wealthy individual, possibly Aulus Rustius Verus, an influential Pompeii politician.

The newly uncovered baths are decorated with sumptuous mosaics and equipped with a series of hot, warm and cold rooms in the manner of a spa.
