A project to document automated license plate readers arrives as more police agencies are using the surveillance technology.

As license plate-reading cameras to fight crime become more common on Michigan roads, their use is raising concerns about personal privacy. These devices record plate numbers of passing vehicles and are different from cameras used to track traffic conditions.

During the Santa Clarita City Council’s regular meeting on Tuesday night, the City approved a contract for 35 license plate reading cameras, among other business.
