Australia’s EV market is quickly becoming more accessible, as Chinese automaker BYD has submerged the cost of its entry-level EV, the BYD Dolphin, below the AU$30,000K price point.

A new entry-level BYD Dolphin sees it slide under $30,000 before on-road costs, while the Atto 3 now starts from less than $40,000.

China’s EV leader is unleashing its low-cost electric cars overseas. BYD now has the first EV to cost under $30,000 in Australia. After launching an even cheaper Dolphin model, BYD said stay tuned for another big announcement on Monday.

Despite new players entering the market and some of the cheapest electric vehicles in the world landing on our shores, EV sales in Australia increased by just 4.7% in 2024 with a total of 91,292 cars sold.
