Barrett spent five seasons in Tampa Bay before his release last offseason. He signed a one-year contract for up to $9 million with the Dolphins in March but never played a snap for the franchise after announcing his retirement in July.

The Dolphins on Thursday, as told to the South Florida Sun Sentinel by agent Drew Rosenhaus and later announced by the team, are waiving Barrett, the 32-year-old defender who signed with the team in March, retired in July and wanted to return from retirement in November.

Barrett, 32, began his career with the Denver Broncos, tallying 14 sacks in four seasons with the team. He eclipsed that total with a league-leading 19.5 sacks in his first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In five seasons with Tampa Bay, he recorded 45 sacks.
