Many people who live along I-10 enjoyed the snow from the comfort of their homes, taking the advice of officials to not get on the roads. But some did, causing backups.

Much of Central Texas will be under a Winter Storm Warning starting Monday at 6 p.m. AUSTIN, Texas - Much of Central Texas is bracing for bitter cold Monday and Tuesday after arctic air arrived Saturday. The Hill Country will be under a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20 and lasting until 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21.

After a statewide blackout in 2021 and a massive Austin outage in 2023, cold weather means energy anxiety for many in Central Texas.

Icy conditions blanket Austin-area roads, with few crashes reported. Officials advise avoiding travel if possible.

Cold also causes the connective tissue, including the ligaments and tendons, to become stiffer, Rahmani said. And when it is cold, often we don't move around as much, further increasing the stiffness.

What started off as a perfect Saturday in Austin quickly changed in the afternoon, reminding Central Texas winter is not over. From city crews, to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), to electric companies everyone is getting ready for what might happen in the next few days.

County offices, as well as some service providers, are announcing closures and changes to their schedules on Monday and Tuesday due to wintry weather.

After closures because of winter weather Tuesday, many school districts are reopening Wednesday, despite frigid temperatures in the forecast.

Officers and emergency staff across Central Texas said they’ve been responding to dozens of crashes since early Tuesday morning. As snow and ice accumulated on roads, ice thickened and created slick and dangerous conditions.
