The Treasury head said recent trade deals announced by the US — including with the European Union and Japan — created a “lot more leverage” and promised China will not get a “special deal,” despite being America’s third largest trading partner among individual nations.

Trump started hiking tariffs on Chinese goods shortly after his return to the White House. China ultimately responded with tariffs of its own. Tensions escalated, with tariff rates hitting the triple digits, before a trade truce in May.

The latest round of talks opened Monday and concluded Tuesday in Stockholm to try to break a logjam over tariffs that have skewed the pivotal commercial ties between the world's two largest economies.
