In their final submission, the CBI lawyers called the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a 'rarest of rare crime'

Sanjay Roy has been convicted in the RG Kar rape and murder case of a junior doctor by the Sealdah CBI Court in Kolkata. The court’s decision was based on forensic evidence and DNA matches, leading to a significant punishment for Roy.

Judge Anirban Das said crime did not fall under “rarest of the rare” category as justification for not giving death penalty to Sanjay Roy.

Roy was on January 18 convicted under charges which entailed a minimum sentence of life imprisonment, while the maximum could be capital punishment.

Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment in the RG Kar rape and murder case. A lawyer, appearing on behalf of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has sought capital punishment for convict Sanjay Roy.

Notably, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had pushed for death sentence for Roy. In the court Roy opposed death penality. "I am being framed, and have not committed any crime. I have not done anything and still, I have been held guilty," Roy told the court ahead of sentencing in the case," the convict said as reported by PTI.
