A federal judge has blocked a plan to slash reimbursement funds the National Institutes of Health provides to public universities and research centers throughout the country, a plan both the University of Washington and Washington State University say would have far-reaching effects on their research programs and likely result in layoffs.

Researchers in Colorado are using words like “catastrophic” and “bombshell” to describe the potential impact of the 15 percent cap.

A federal judge paused cuts that the Trump administration had made to funding for public health research, but Monday’s temporary restraining order will apply only in the 22 Democratic-led states that brought a lawsuit challenging the reduction in funding.
