John Dramani Mahama was sworn in for a second term as Ghana's president on Tuesday at a ceremony in the capital Accra, pledging to overcome public discontent by boosting the economy and creating much-needed jobs.

John Mahama will be sworn in on Tuesday as Ghana’s president for the third time, as the country faces its worst economic crisis in a generation.

Ghana on Tuesday swore in president-elect John Mahama in the capital Accra before some 20 regional leaders as he promises to lift the West African gold and cocoa producer out of the doldrums.The country of 33 million people is Africa's top gold exporter and the world's second cocoa producer.

Mahama became president in 2012 when John Evans Atta-Mills died in office. He won a presidential election a few months later and his first and only term was plagued by power shortages, macroeconomic instability and allegations of political corruption.

John Mahama was inaugurated as Ghana’s president on Tuesday, returning to the office he held eight years ago following his commanding victory in December elections.Mahama, 66, trounced the ruling-party’s candidate Mahamudu Bawumia amid voter anger over economic hardship exacerbated by Ghana’s 2022 sovereign-debt default.
