Wasps are territorial enough that the sight of an existing nest nearby can send a scouting queen elsewhere. A stuffed paper bag hung under the eaves costs nothing and can redirect the problem before it starts.
The great golden digger wasp, Sphex icheneumoneus, is a large wasp that sports golden hairs on the head and thorax and has a distinctive half orange half black abdomen. It is harmless to people and is often found on flowers in or near sandy soils where it digs nests for larvae in the ground. Main prey for larvae is katydids.
If you see a gray, papery cylinder hanging from a tree branch, eave of your house, or some other spot on your property, it could be a wasp nest. A hole at the bottom of the nest serves as the entrance and exit for resident wasps, so again, don’t get too close if you see activity near it.
Whether fake wasp nests actually work is hard to say, but combine one with a few other preventive measures, and maybe outdoor season can be fun again.
