Prithviraj Chavan started his career in 1991 winning the then Karad seat, which had been held by his parents. He later also won the seat in 1996 and 1998 but lost in 1999.

Two candidates, both fondly referred to as "Baba" by locals, are vying for the seat. Prithviraj Chavan, a veteran Congressman and former Maharashtra Chief Minister, is hoping for a victory hat-trick.
