Three men’s lacrosse players remain hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis over a week after participating in a 45-minute workout led by a Tufts alumnus and graduate of a Navy SEAL training program, executive director of media relations Patrick Collins wrote in a statement on Monday.

“This is a failure of the strength and conditioning program — an epic failure,” said Douglas J. Casa, chief executive of the Korey Stringer Institute at the University of Connecticut. “Somebody made a dramatic mistake in terms of how the workout was organized in terms of intensity, volume, recovery. Something was dramatically wrong.”

The players became ill following a workout that was led by a Tufts alum who is a recent graduate of the BUD/S Navy SEAL training program.

Twelve members of the Tufts University men's lacrosse team were diagnosed with a medical condition related to extreme exertion, and five were hospitalized.
