A majority of the court appeared skeptical of a challenge to Louisiana’s voting map. The challengers had argued the state impermissibly relied on race to draw its map.

The U.S. Supreme Court grappled on Monday with a bid by Louisiana officials and civil rights groups to preserve an electoral map that raised the number of Black-majority congressional districts in the state and prompted a challenge by non-Black voters.

The justices will decide whether race or politics was the main factor as Louisiana lawmakers redrew districts for Congress.
