Air India has confirmed that one of its flights from the US was forced to turn around last week after passengers trying to flush away plastic bags, rags and clothes clogged up most of its toilets. The plane, which was heading from Chicago to India's capital Delhi, spent several hours in the air before it returned to the US city.

Air India is urging travelers to "use lavatories only for purposes they are meant for" after a flight to Delhi returned to Chicago due to eight of its 12 toilets becoming clogged.

Air India said a flight from Chicago to Delhi was disrupted when eight of the 12 lavatories on the plane, a Boeing 777, were rendered “unserviceable.”

The Air India plane had nearly 300 passengers on board and was supposed to fly for 14 hours. But just under two hours into the journey, crew members noticed that many of the toilets were not working,
