Protests erupted in Pithampur, Dhar district, over the arrival of toxic waste from Bhopal’s Union Carbide factory, which has been stored for nearly four decades and linked to the 1984 gas tragedy.

The toxic waste, a grim reminder of the world's largest industrial disaster in 1984, was transported to Pithampur for disposal at the state-of-the-art Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility (TSDF).

On December 3, 2024, the Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered the shifting of the waste to Pithampur for disposal. The state government is to submit a status report to the courts on January 03, 2025.
