A massive asteroid, 535844 (2015 BY310), measuring roughly 460 feet in diameter, is set to pass Earth on March 5, 2025. Traveling at 17,583 miles per hour, NASA is closely monitoring its path due to its potential threat.

NASA announced Monday that the asteroid, named 2024 YR 4, no longer poses a “significant threat” to Earth in 2032 or beyond. “NASA analysis drops asteroid 2024 YR4's impact probability to 0.004%, meaning it is expected to safely pass by Earth in 2032,” NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office posted on X Monday.

Even in the increasingly unlikely event of an impact from YR4, Oregon and the Pacific Northwest appear to be safe from impact. Computer models showed areas of South America, Africa and southeast Asia would have the highest risk in the event of an impact, based on what astronomers know about the asteroid’s orbit.
