The funeral plans for former president Jimmy Carter will begin on Saturday with a motorcade from his hometown in Plains, Ga. to the Carter Center in Atlanta.

Jimmy Carter lived in the Georgia governor's mansion and the White House, but his real home was in the tiny town of Plains. It is in this town in the southwestern part of the Peach State that the president will be laid to rest after a journey back to Atlanta and Washington.

McPherson recalled visiting Plains with his aunt and uncle during Carter’s presidential campaign and meeting Carter’s brother, Billy, at his service station. He also recalled meeting Carter in at Mom’s Kitchen in Preston, about 10 miles west of Plains, and on a flight back to Atlanta from Billings, Montana.

Jimmy Carter’s home located in Plains and his final resting place will become a historical site open to the public sooner rather than later. Back in 2000, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter decided they would open their burial site to the world.
