The terminology, in typical Germanic fashion, is a little confusing. The entire system is called "Panoramic iDrive," with “Panoramic Vision” being the funky horizontal band display across the whole dash; meanwhile, the all-new software the whole enchilada runs on is named “BMW Operating System X.”

BMW used CES to introduce their new Panoramic iDrive system, which features a pillar-to-pillar display located at the base of the windscreen. Now, Hyundai Mobis is one upping them with a holographic head-up display that projects information onto the bottom of the windshield.

With its sweeping 3D graphics, the head-up display, or HUD, is Panoramic iDrive's most eye-catching component. BMW says the HUD projects navigation and dashboard information within the driver's line of sight without needing a special windshield coating—which means drivers won't have another thing to pay for when a rock inevitably cracks the glass.
