The one-time Georgia prosecutor accused of using her office to impede the investigation into Ahmaud Arbery’s killers is set to stand trial more than four years after the Black 26-year-old’s death fueled nationwide protests over racial injustice.

At the time Ahmaud Arbery was killed, Jackie Johnson had served for a decade as district attorney for the Brunswick Judicial Circuit. Greg McMichael worked in her office as an investigator before retiring in 2019.

A former prosecutor will stand trial on charges she meddled with police investigating the 2020 killing of Ahmaud Arbery.

A judge in Brunswick, Georgia, seated the jury Tuesday for the trial of former District Attorney Jackie Johnson.

Jackie Johnson spent a decade as the state’s top prosecutor for the coastal Brunswick Judicial Circuit. She’s charged with violating her oath of office and hindering police as they investigated Ahmaud Arbery’s death.

Attorneys clashed before a trial jury Tuesday over whether a former prosecutor abused her power to try to protect the men who chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery in the streets of a quiet Georgia neighborhood nearly five years ago.
