By Stephanie Brown HealthDay ReporterTUESDAY, June 3, 2025 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new lower-dose vaccine for active immunization against COVID-19 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

Over the weekend, the FDA issued final approval for a new type of vaccine from Moderna, a next generation shot that allows for a lower dose by refining its targeting system, but the FDA will only allow it for seniors and at-risk groups.

Moderna MRNA announced the FDA approval for mRNA-1283, its next-generation refrigerator-stable COVID-19 vaccine, though for a label narrower than initially targeted. The vaccine will be marketed under the brand name mNexspike.
